Streamlined IT management for North East London NHS Foundation Trust

Altiatech supported North East London NHS Foundation Trust with a System Centre Configuration Manager proof of concept, helping the Trust assess a more controlled model for device management, software deployment, operating system deployment and IT estate visibility.

Overview

Helping a large NHS foundation trust improve the way IT infrastructure could be managed at scale.

North East London NHS Foundation Trust provides mental and community health services across a large and distributed estate. The Trust needed a structured proof of concept to assess whether System Centre Configuration Manager could improve administration, deployment, monitoring and service management.

Programme priorities

From infrastructure evaluation to practical deployment readiness.

The engagement focused on creating a functional proof of concept that could demonstrate centralised management, application deployment, driver integration, image deployment and stronger visibility across the Trust's IT environment.

Evaluate SCCM capability

Assess how Configuration Manager could support NELFT's administration, monitoring, provisioning and service management needs.

Improve deployment control

Test the ability to deploy applications, drivers and operating system images in a more consistent and repeatable way.

Support a distributed estate

Provide a proof of concept suited to a healthcare organisation operating across more than 150 sites.

Strengthen operational visibility

Improve inventory, reporting, compliance awareness and the Trust's understanding of its IT estate.

The challenge

Creating a reliable proof of concept for centralised IT management in a complex NHS environment.

NELFT needed to understand how a robust management platform could help automate IT administration, support deployment activity, improve visibility and reduce the burden of manual infrastructure management across its estate.

Scale

Supporting a large healthcare estate

The Trust operates across more than 150 sites, increasing the need for consistent configuration, visibility and deployment control.

Management

Centralising device administration

NELFT needed to evaluate centralised management across desktops, laptops and mobile devices.

Deployment

Making software rollout more consistent

The project needed to test application packaging and deployment strategies for silent installation.

Operating systems

Improving OS deployment

NELFT required image deployment capabilities, task sequences, PXE boot and a standard Windows image for future rollout.

Visibility

Improving inventory and reporting

The Trust needed better insight into its IT estate to support reporting, compliance and operational decision-making.

Efficiency

Reducing administrative overhead

The proof of concept needed to show how automation could reduce manual effort and improve consistency.

Altiatech's role

Building, configuring and proving the SCCM environment needed to test the Trust's requirements.

Altiatech delivered a structured proof of concept covering SCCM and SQL installation, application packaging, driver pack creation, image deployment configuration, task sequencing, scheduled updates and distribution point setup.

Delivery focus

Build • Package • Configure

A practical proof of concept built around operational IT management.

The engagement gave NELFT a functional SCCM environment that could be tested against real infrastructure management requirements, helping the Trust evaluate centralised management, deployment automation and reporting capability.

Foundation

SCCM and SQL build

Installed and configured SCCM and SQL server, including core roles and features required for the proof of concept.

Applications

Application packaging

Created 10 application packages for silent installation and developed deployment strategies for those applications.

Hardware

Device driver integration

Created five device driver packs for specific hardware models and integrated them into SCCM.

Deployment

Image and task sequence setup

Configured image deployment, task sequences, scheduled updates, distribution points and PXE boot capability.

The approach

A phased implementation focused on build, packaging, deployment and operational readiness.

Altiatech's approach gave NELFT a structured route from platform build through to application deployment, driver integration, task sequencing and Windows image development.

01

Build SCCM and SQL

Install and configure the core SCCM and SQL environment needed for the proof of concept.

02

Set up SCCM roles

Configure the core SCCM roles and features needed to test management and deployment capabilities.

03

Package applications

Create 10 application packages and deployment strategies for silent installation.

04

Integrate device drivers

Create and integrate five device driver packs for specific hardware models.

05

Configure deployment

Set up image deployment, task sequences, scheduled updates, distribution points and PXE boot.

06

Create Windows image

Develop a standardised Windows image with the required drivers and applications integrated.

Outcomes

A functional management environment and clearer control over deployment, reporting and IT operations.

The proof of concept helped NELFT validate how SCCM could support centralised device management, automated software deployment, operating system deployment, inventory reporting, compliance and reduced administrative overhead.

Centralised device management

NELFT gained a clearer route to managing desktops, laptops and mobile devices from a central platform.

Automated software deployment

The proof of concept demonstrated how packaged applications and deployment strategies could support more consistent rollout.

Streamlined OS deployment

Task sequences, PXE boot and a standard Windows image supported a more repeatable deployment process.

Better inventory and reporting

The Trust gained improved visibility into its IT estate through enhanced inventory management and reporting capability.

Improved compliance awareness

The work supported better compliance and security management through clearer systems control.

Reduced administrative overhead

Automation and centralised management created a path to reducing manual IT administration effort.

Project impact

A proof of concept that helped NELFT move towards more consistent and visible IT management.

With 10 packaged applications, five device driver packs, a standardised Windows image and a functional SCCM environment, the Trust was better equipped to improve deployment consistency, estate visibility and operational control.
